El área natural protegida del Ruhrtal entre Olsberg y Assinghausen, con un tamaño de 48,4 ha, se extiende al sur de Olsberg hasta Assinghausen en el distrito de Hochsauerland. El área fue designada como zona de protección de la naturaleza en 2001 por el gobierno del distrito de Arnsberg. En 2004, el área fue nuevamente designada como NSG con el plan paisajístico de Olsberg por el distrito de Hochsauerland. El Ruhr en el NSG también forma parte desde 2004 del área de hábitat de fauna y flora del Ruhr en el sistema de áreas protegidas europeas según Natura 2000.
