L'area protetta Ruhrtal tra Olsberg e Assinghausen, con una dimensione di 48,4 ha, si estende a sud di Olsberg fino ad Assinghausen nel circondario di Hochsauerland. L'area è stata designata come riserva naturale nel 2001 dal governo distrettuale di Arnsberg. Nel 2004, l'area è stata nuovamente designata come NSG con il piano paesaggistico di Olsberg dal circondario di Hochsauerland. Il fiume Ruhr all'interno dell'NSG rappresenta dal 2004 anche una parte della zona Fauna-Flora-Habitat Ruhr nel sistema di aree protette europee secondo la direttiva Natura 2000.
