El camino de deslizamiento Rauendahl en Hattingen, al sur de Bochum, fue construido en 1787 en el Ruhrgebiet como el primero de una serie de caminos de carbón impulsados por caballos, siguiendo el modelo británico de la época, para el transporte del carbón extraído al punto de transbordo en el Ruhr. El nombre fue adoptado de los caminos de deslizamiento con carros de mano. Como era habitual en esa época, las vías estaban hechas de tablones de madera; a partir de 1794, se revestían con placas de hierro fundido para reducir el desgaste. Debido a la construcción de la vía operada con rieles reforzados con hierro, el camino de deslizamiento Rauendahl se cuenta entre los primeros ferrocarriles de habla alemana, teniendo una longitud de aproximadamente 1.600 metros.
