Fue en este lugar en el antiguo Nürburgring, en la curva a la izquierda antes de Bergwerk, donde Niki Lauda sufrió una falla mecánica y se estrelló de lado contra las barreras de protección. Amenazaba con quemarse vivo cuando el coche siniestrado se incendiaba, pero fue salvado por cuatro pilotos que venían detrás de él y se dieron cuenta de la gravedad del accidente; se detuvieron de inmediato y saltaron de sus coches. Esto ocurrió en 1976.
