Se trata de un extenso municipio rural situado cerca de la costa. Dentro de sus límites se encuentra el parque natural de Pagoeta.Integrado en la comarca de Urola Costa, se sitúa a 29 kilómetros de San Sebastián. El término municipal está atravesado por la Autopista del Cantábrico , por la carretera N-634 entre los pK 14 y 16, por la carretera provincial GI-2631, que se dirige a Asteasu, y por una carretera local que comunica con Orio.
