El ataque turco en Menorca ocurre en una época de conflicto entre el rey Felipe II de Castilla y Enrique II de Francia, en medio de las pretensiones del papa Pablo IV de conseguir el control del Reino de Nápoles. Así, se producen en el ámbito continental la Batalla de San Quintín , tras la invasión de Nápoles por parte de los franceses, y la Batalla de Gravelines , mientras que en el ámbito del Mediterráneo se preparaba la conquista de Córcega por parte de Francia, en manos hispanogenovesas, y ataques a Niza, en manos de la casa de Savoia, aliada de Felipe II en la guerra contra Francia.
