Notre-Dame era la iglesia de un pequeño priorato cluniacense y forma parte de la comuna francesa de Châtel-Montagne en el departamento de Allier, en la frontera entre las regiones de Auvernia y Borgoña, a unos 20 kilómetros al este de Vichy y aproximadamente 35 kilómetros al oeste de Roanne. Châtel-Montagne está flanqueado por el río Besbre, que ha sido embalsado en múltiples ocasiones.
