El Garona es el río más grande del suroeste de Francia. Nace en los Pirineos españoles como Garona y entra en Francia cerca de Bagnères-de-Luchon. A través de Saint-Gaudens, llega a Toulouse. El Garona, que todavía es in navegable, está conectado con Burdeos a través del Canal Lateral a la Garona, que corre paralelo al río, desde aquí hasta Castets-en-Dorthe, para facilitar la navegación. A través del Canal del Mediodía hay una conexión con el mar Mediterráneo.
Desde Burdeos, que tiene un gran puerto, el Garona también es navegable para embarcaciones de mar. Justo más allá de Burdeos, en el "Bec d'Ambès", el Garona se une al Dordoña para formar el estuario de la Gironda. Este embudo de casi 100 km de largo y hasta 10 km de ancho desemboca en el océano Atlántico en Royan.
