La cuenca aquitana es la segunda cuenca sedimentaria mesozoica y cenozoica más grande de Francia, después de la cuenca de París. La cuenca, que abarca alrededor de 66,000 kilómetros cuadrados, se sitúa sobre el basamento varisco erosionado durante el Pérmico, que comenzó a hundirse gradualmente desde el Triásico. En la cuenca de Parentis y en la cuenca subpirenaica, el basamento se encuentra, en su punto más profundo, oculto bajo una sobrecarga sedimentaria de 11,000 metros.
