Avec environ 66 000 kilomètres carrés le Bassin aquitain, ou bassin d'Aquitaine, est après le Bassin parisien le deuxième plus grand bassin sédimentaire de la France dont il occupe une grande part du sud-ouest, entre l'océan Atlantique à l'ouest, les Pyrénées au sud, le Massif central au nord-est et le Massif armoricain au nord. Le bassin est établi sur le socle cristallophyllien hercynien aplani pendant le Permien et qui commença à s'abaisser dès le Trias. Dans le bassin de Parentis et dans le bassin sous-pyrénéen le socle est enfoui sous 11 000 mètres de sédiments.
