Het Aquitaanse Bekken is, na het Parijse Bekken, het op één na grootste mesozoïsche en kenozoïsche sedimentbekken van Frankrijk. Het ongeveer 66.000 vierkante kilometer grote bekken ligt boven het tijdens het Perm geërodeerde variscische fundament, dat sinds het Trias geleidelijk begon te zakken. In het Parentis-bekken en het Subpyreneeënbekken ligt het fundament op zijn diepste punt verborgen onder een sedimentlading van 11.000 meter.
