El pueblo de Courbesseaux, que fue el cuartel general del contraataque del general de Castelnau el 25 de agosto de 1914, fue arrasado durante la Primera Guerra Mundial. La Necrópolis Nacional alberga los cuerpos de 2.679 víctimas de los combates de esta guerra, y en particular los de la batalla de Grand-Couronné en agosto y septiembre de 1914.
Un gran monumento rinde homenaje a estas víctimas: un bronce, esculpido por Eugène Gatelet en 1924, muestra a un joven campesino con un zueco depositando una corona de flores en la tumba de un soldado muerto por Francia.
En 1964 se erigió una sencilla estela en memoria del general Edouard de Castelnau, vencedor de esta batalla. Esta hazaña le valió el apodo de "Salvador de Nancy" y el ascenso a Gran Oficial de la Legión de Honor.
