La construcción de la torre finalizó durante el reinado de Valéran III de Luxemburgo, en el siglo XIV. Con 22 metros de altura, su función militar se refleja en las aspilleras, las troneras y las matacanes. En la Edad Media, la Torre Valéran era una de las puertas de entrada a la ciudad. En las salas de la torre, los prisioneros han grabado inscripciones en las paredes, la más legible de las cuales reza: "Me metieron en este calabozo infernal a pan y agua por haber sido acusado de traer tabaco de contrabando".
