El museo está construido en el barrio de Bassins à flot. El arquitecto elegido para este museo es el bordelés Olivier Brochet. Acababa de renovar el Museo del Hombre de París
Norbert Fradin, promotor y mecenas, está creando un museo dedicado a su otra pasión, el mar y los marineros. También ha comprado los barcos del antiguo Conservatorio de la Plaisance, entre ellos un legendario velero gigante: el Vendredi 13, el barco de Jean-Yves Terlain botado en 1972
También se organizan exposiciones temporales a lo largo del año.
