Situado en la meseta de Mille Étangs, en lo alto de una montaña, es el resultado de los repetidos desbordamientos del glaciar del Mosela durante las glaciaciones. El nombre de Corfaing procede de "faigne", los musgos cuya descomposición incompleta forma la turba, que sigue siendo visible cuando se drena el estanque o en verano, cuando los manantiales ya no bastan para abastecerlo. Las aguas ácidas y los cambios estacionales ofrecen la oportunidad de observar plantas "semiacuáticas" de interés regional (junco de hoja estrecha, pequeño nenúfar amarillo, Littorelle uniflore, etc.).
