Los jardines del bulevar Gambetta se crearon a partir de los fosos de las murallas medievales de la ciudad cuando se ampliaron los suburbios.
Conocido inicialmente como Jardín de Vienne (en referencia al río que desembocaba en el foso a cielo abierto hasta 1853), el jardín fue diseñado en 1860 entre el Teatro de la Madeleine y la calle de la Madeleine.
El jardín del Valle Suizo, al igual que el Jardín del Rocher, evoca la exuberante vegetación de un valle alpino. El jardín está animado por una cascada que desemboca en un arroyo artificial con un lecho de hormigón que discurre bajo un puente de inspiración japonesa .
