Thornton-le-Clay es un pueblo y parroquia civil en el distrito de Ryedale en North Yorkshire, Inglaterra. Está a unas 8 millas al noreste de York.
El pueblo se menciona en el libro de Domesday como Torentune en el száz de Bulford. Hay tres referencias en total. La primera como parte de la mansión de Fostun; en segundo lugar, como parte de la mansión de Bulmer y, por último, como parte del Wapentac de Bolesforde. La etimología del nombre es en inglés antiguo y significa asentamiento rodeado de espinos. El sufijo se relaciona con la naturaleza del suelo en el área circundante.
