Thornton-le-Clay est un village et une paroisse civile dans le district de Ryedale dans le Yorkshire du Nord, en Angleterre. Il se trouve à environ 8 miles au nord-est de York.
Le village est mentionné dans le livre de Domesday sous le nom de Torentune dans le hundred de Bulford. Il y a trois références au total. La première en tant que partie du manoir de Fostun ; la deuxième en tant que partie du manoir de Bulmer et enfin en tant que partie du Wapentac de Bolesforde. L'étymologie du nom est en vieil anglais et signifie établissement entouré de buissons d'églantier. Le suffixe se rapporte à la nature du sol dans la région environnante.
