Ajalkalaki es una pequeña ciudad en la región de Samtsje-Yavajeti sur de Georgia, con una población de 8 295. Akhalkalaki encuentra en el borde de la meseta volcánica Javakheti. Se encuentra a unos 30 km de la frontera con Turquía. El 93,8 por ciento de la población de la ciudad es de origen armenio.
Según la leyenda, fue fundada por el rey Parnavaz (325 a. C. - 237 a. C.].[1] Sin embargo, los historiadores consideran que Ajalkalaki fue fundada en 1064. En 1066 fue destruida durante las invasiones selyúcidas del Reino de Georgia.[2] En el siglo XI se convirtió en el centro político y económico de Javakheti.
