La famosa estatua de Nike en Olimpia está vinculada a esta isla Sphacteria. Era una escultura de Paeonias. Los espartanos ocuparon Messina y tuvieron un bastión en Sphacteria y barcos en la bahía para controlar la zona. En agosto de 435 a.C., después de 72 días de asedio a la fortaleza del norte de Sphacteria, los atenienses con la ayuda de los mesenios forzaron a los espartanos a rendirse por primera vez en su historia. Como una ofrenda votiva, se hizo la maravillosa estatua de Nike y se ofreció en Olimpia. La estatua ahora puede verse en el Museo Arqueológico de Olimpia.
