La famosa statua di Nike a Olimpia è legata a quest'isola Sphacteria. Era una scultura di Paeonias. Gli Spartani occupavano Messina e avevano un forte a Sphacteria e navi nella baia per controllare l'area. Nell'agosto del 435 a.C., dopo 72 giorni di assedio alla fortezza settentrionale di Sphacteria, gli Ateniesi con l'aiuto dei Messiniani costrinsero gli Spartani a capitolare per la prima volta nella loro storia. Come offerta votiva, la meravigliosa statua di Nike fu realizzata e offerta a Olimpia. La statua può ora essere vista nel Museo Archeologico di Olimpia.
