Het beroemde standbeeld van Nike in Olympia is verbonden met dit eiland Sphacteria. Het was een sculptuur van kunstenaar Paeonias. Spartanen bezetten Messina en hadden een bolwerk op Sphacteria en schepen in de baai om het gebied te beheersen. In augustus 435 v.Chr., na 72 dagen het noordelijke fort van Sphacteria te hebben belegerd, dwongen de Atheners met de hulp van de Messiniërs de Spartanen zich voor het eerst in hun geschiedenis over te geven. Als offer werd het prachtige beeld van Nike gemaakt en aangeboden in Olympia. Het beeld is nu te zien in het Archeologisch Museum van Olympia.
