Quercus coccifera o roble kermés es el árbol dominante del matorral. El roble kermés es frecuentemente parasitado por un insecto, llamado Kermes vermilio. Kermes es un tinte rojo derivado de los cuerpos secos de las hembras de este insecto. Los insectos kermés son nativos de la región mediterránea y son parásitos que viven de la savia de la planta hospedadora. Fueron utilizados como un tinte rojo por los antiguos griegos y romanos. El tinte kermés es un rojo intenso, un carmesí. Tiene buena resistencia al color en seda y lana. Fue muy apreciado en la era medieval para teñir seda y lana, particularmente tela escarlata.
