Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Pilio, al igual que el resto de Grecia, se vio gravemente afectado por la ocupación de la Alemania nazi. En Pilio, muchos residentes se marcharon después de la guerra debido a la pobreza y la devastación; algunos buscaron trabajo en Volos o en Europa occidental, dejando las aldeas de montaña, incluidas Portarià, en peligro de ser abandonadas.
