La iglesia fue construida en 1531 junto con el monasterio benedictino adyacente Badia Nuova , demolida en 1699 y reconstruida en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII.
Es discreto por fuera , pero por dentro es equilibrado y espacialmente discreto. Hay un hermoso cuadro de Pietro Novelli que representa a San Benito de Nurcia dispensando la regla. Hay ocho estatuas de estuco realizadas en 1724 por Giacomo Serpotta, que se encuentran entre las obras maestras más importantes del artista y se acercan a las obras de Bernini en términos de fuerza expresiva. Las imágenes que adornan las paredes son: Paz, Humanidad, Fortaleza, Pureza, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, María Magdalena, San Pedro y San Pablo.
