La chiesa fu edificata nel 1531 insieme all'adiacente monastero benedettino Badia Nuova , demolito nel 1699 e ricostruito nella prima metà del XVIII secolo.
È discreto all'esterno , ma all'interno è equilibrato e spazialmente sommesso. Bellissimo il dipinto di Pietro Novelli raffigurante San Benedetto da Norcia mentre dispensa la regola. Sono otto le statue in stucco realizzate nel 1724 da Giacomo Serpotta, che sono tra i capolavori più importanti dell'artista e si avvicinano per forza espressiva alle opere del Bernini. Le immagini che adornano le pareti sono: Pace, Umanità, Forza, Purezza, Madonna Addolorata, Maria Maddalena, San Pietro e San Paolo
