L'église a été construite en 1531 avec le monastère bénédictin adjacent Badia Nuova , démoli en 1699 et reconstruit dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle.
Il est discret à l'extérieur , mais à l' intérieur il est équilibré et spatialement sobre. Il y a un beau tableau de Pietro Novelli représentant saint Benoît de Norcie dispensant la règle. Il existe huit statues en stuc réalisées en 1724 par Giacomo Serpotta, qui comptent parmi les chefs-d'œuvre les plus importants de l'artiste et se rapprochent des œuvres du Bernin en termes de puissance expressive. Les images qui ornent les murs sont : Paix, Humanité, Force, Pureté, Notre-Dame des Douleurs, Marie-Madeleine, Saint Pierre et Saint Paul.
