L'església va ser construïda el 1531 juntament amb el monestir benedictí adjacent Badia Nuova , enderrocat el 1699 i reconstruït a la primera meitat del segle XVIII.
És discret per fora , però per dins és equilibrat i espacialment suau. Hi ha un bonic quadre de Pietro Novelli que representa sant Benet de Nèrcia dispensant la regla. Hi ha vuit estàtues d'estuc realitzades l'any 1724 per Giacomo Serpotta, que es troben entre les obres mestres més importants de l'artista i que s'apropen a les obres de Bernini en termes de poder expressiu. Les imatges que adornen les parets són: Pau, Humanitat, Força, Puresa, Mare de Déu dels Dolors, Maria Magdalena, Sant Pere i Sant Pau
