La historia del Castillo Bloemendal comienza con el fabricante de paño de Aquisgrán Arnold von Clermont. Como proveedor de la corte del zar ruso, Von Clermont había llegado lejos con su negocio de paños. A la edad de 63 años, decidió cumplir su sueño de vida. Frente a su nueva fábrica de tejidos, se colocó la primera piedra de una residencia principesca en 1791. Esta residencia llevaba el nombre de Schloss Blumenthal.
