La storia del Castello di Bloemendal inizia con il fabbricante di stoffe di Aquisgrana Arnold von Clermont. Come fornitore di corte dello zar russo, von Clermont aveva fatto strada con il suo commercio di tessuti. All'età di 63 anni, decise di realizzare il suo sogno di vita. Di fronte al suo nuovo stabilimento tessile, nel 1791 fu posta la prima pietra di una residenza principesca. Questa residenza era chiamata Schloss Blumenthal.
