De geschiedenis van Kasteel Bloemendal begint bij de Akense lakenfabrikant Arnold von Clermont. Als hofleverancier van de Russische tsaar had Von Clermont het ver geschopt met zijn handel in lakens. Op 63-jarige leeftijd besloot hij zijn levensdroom te verwezenlijken. Tegenover zijn nieuwe weverij werd in 1791 de eerste steen gelegd van een vorstelijk buitenverblijf. Dit verblijf droeg de naam Schloss Blumenthal.
