Se encuentra al sureste de Sneek y al oeste de Joure, en el borde del lago de Langweerderwielen. En 2021, el pueblo tenía 1,050 habitantes. Langweer se originó probablemente alrededor del año 1100, lo que lo convierte en uno de los pueblos más antiguos de la zona. Durante un tiempo fue un auténtico pueblo de canales, pero se habría formado originalmente como un terreno alargado y bajo, además de pradera, lo que explicaría el nombre del lugar. El pueblo fue mencionado en el siglo XIII como Languere, en 1399 como Langwerre, en 1473 como op Langweer y en 1505 como Langhweer.
