Si trova a sud-est di Sneek e a ovest di Joure, ai margini del lago Langweerderwielen. Nel 2021 il villaggio contava 1.050 abitanti. Langweer è probabilmente nato intorno al 1100, rendendolo uno dei villaggi più antichi della zona. È stato per un certo periodo un vero villaggio navigabile, ma avrebbe avuto origine come un lungo appezzamento di terreno basso, annesso a pascolo, il che spiegherebbe il nome del luogo. Il villaggio è stato citato nel 13° secolo come Languere, nel 1399 come Langwerre, nel 1473 come op Langweer e nel 1505 come Langhweer.
