Es liegt im Südosten von Sneek und im Westen von Joure, am Rand des Sees de Langweerderwielen. Im Jahr 2021 hatte das Dorf 1.050 Einwohner. Langweer entstand wahrscheinlich um 1100 und ist somit eines der ältesten Dörfer in der Umgebung. Es war eine Zeit lang ein echtes Fahrtendorf, soll aber ursprünglich als langgestrecktes, niedrig gelegenes Grundstück mit Wiese entstanden sein, was den Ortsnamen erklären würde. Das Dorf wurde im 13. Jahrhundert als Languere, 1399 als Langwerre, 1473 als op Langweer und 1505 als Langhweer erwähnt.
