Det ligger sydøst for Sneek og vest for Joure, ved kanten af søen de Langweerderwielen. I 2021 havde landsbyen 1.050 indbyggere. Langweer er sandsynligvis opstået omkring 1100 og er dermed en af de ældste landsbyer i området. Det var i en periode en rigtig kanaldorf, men skulle oprindeligt være opstået som et langstrakt, lavtliggende stykke jord samt græsland, hvilket ville forklare stednavnet. Landsbyen blev i det 13. århundrede nævnt som Languere, i 1399 som Langwerre, i 1473 som op Langweer og i 1505 som Langhweer.
