Het ligt ten zuidoosten van Sneek en ten westen van Joure, aan de rand van het meer de Langweerderwielen. In 2021 telde het dorp 1.050 inwoners.Langweer is waarschijnlijk rond 1100 ontstaan en daarmee een van de oudste dorpen in de omgeving. Het was een tijdlang een echt vaartdorp, maar zou van oorsprong als langgerekt laag gelegen perceel grond annex grasland zijn ontstaan, hetgeen de plaatsnaam zou verklaren. Het dorp werd in de 13e eeuw vermeld als Languere, in 1399 als Langwerre, in 1473 als op Langweer en in 1505 als Langhweer.
