Opduin fue originalmente construido en 1913 como vivienda en el paseo marítimo de Schiermonnikoog. Los encargados del proyecto fueron Arnoldus Onnes, comerciante de vino en Groningen, y su esposa Allagonda Barghoorn. Debido a la erosión del lado norte de la isla, el paseo marítimo ha desaparecido en el Mar del Norte. Para salvar a Opduin, así como la cercana casa Anagber, se destruyó y reconstruyó la casa en dos ocasiones. Desde 1922, la vivienda casi en forma de cubo se encuentra al norte del Badweg y Anagber al sur del Badweg. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la casa fue utilizada por los alemanes como depósito de municiones. Debido al estado en que se encontraba la vivienda, se decidió restaurar por completo el edificio. En 2008 se completaron los trabajos de restauración en el edificio. También se han reinstalado las contraventanas que habían desaparecido con el tiempo.
