El asilo fue fundado en 1553 por Hid Hero Jelbethdr. En una piedra angular manierista se representa una figura femenina que apaga el fuego de los pecados. La escultura de una portería data de 1660. En 1865, según el diseño de L. Levoir, el antiguo edificio principal fue reemplazado por un edificio de formas eclécticas con sótano, ático y un risalte central con dormer. Entre 1875 y 1877, se reemplazó un ala de 1808 según los planos de H. Bouma. En 1951 y 1978 se remodeló el antiguo asilo.
