El lago se formó tras la extracción de arena para la construcción de la Grebbelinie y la autovía A12. Originalmente, el área era una gran duna de arena y eso resultó muy útil cuando en 1972 se profundizó este estanque y se convirtió en una hermosa playa con agua para nadar. Más de 600,000 personas visitan el área cada año. No solo es popular en los cálidos días de verano, sino también en invierno cuando el lago está congelado.
El área recreativa tiene 60ha de tamaño.
