Junto con el Ammeloër Venn (al otro lado de la frontera alemana), el Haaksbergerveen (más de 600 hectáreas) es uno de los restos de una enorme zona de pantano alto. En el Haagsbergerveen se extrajo turba a pequeña escala, lo que dio lugar a un paisaje variado. La zona está caracterizada por pantanos elevados húmedos y amplias áreas de brezal, salpicadas de arbustos y praderas.
La parte más occidental del Haaksbergerveen se llama Armenveen. Aquí había muy poca turba. A través de la iglesia o del mercado, las personas más pobres recibieron permiso para cruzar turba aquí.
Debido a la extracción de turba y el drenaje, el pantano alto se ha vuelto raro. Staatsbosbeheer retiene ahora tanta agua de lluvia como sea posible, para permitir que el pantano alto se desarrolle.
