En 1693 se estableció el astillero 'De Hoop' junto al dique de Workum. En el siglo XVIII se construyeron en el cobertizo de carpintería barcos de vela para la navegación interior y costera. En el siglo XIX, muchos barcos de pesca de madera salieron de la slope.
El astillero fue renovado en los años 1976 y 1977. Hoy en día, se restauran y mantienen principalmente barcos históricos.
Según el Servicio Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural, 'De Hoop' es el astillero de barcos en funcionamiento más antiguo de Europa Occidental. Debido a la singularidad del cobertizo de carpintería, su antigüedad y su historia, la integridad y su conexión con la historia de Workum, todo el complejo ha sido reconocido como un monumento nacional. Los monumentos nacionales son edificios u otros objetos que han sido designados por el gobierno nacional como monumentos protegidos debido a su valor cultural e histórico nacional.
