Nel 1693 fu realizzato il cantiere navale 'De Hoop' accanto alla chiusa di Workum. Nel XVIII secolo, nel capannone di legno, vennero costruite navi a vela per la navigazione interna e costiera. Nel XIX secolo, da qui scivolarono molti pescherecci in legno.
Il cantiere fu ristrutturato negli anni 1976 e 1977. Oggi vengono principalmente restaurate e mantenute navi storiche.
Secondo il Servizio del Patrimonio Culturale dei Paesi Bassi, 'De Hoop' è il cantiere navale ancora attivo più antico dell'Europa occidentale. A causa dell'unicità del capannone, della sua età e della sua storia, della completezza e dell'intreccio con la storia di Workum, l'intero complesso è stato riconosciuto come monumento nazionale. I monumenti nazionali sono edifici o altri oggetti che, per il loro valore culturale e storico nazionale, sono stati designati come monumenti protetti dal governo centrale.
