El palacio de Dom Manuel era un palacio real donde muchos reyes portugueses se habían hospedado. Según la crónica, el palacio constaba de varios edificios, entre ellos un monasterio renacentista, la Sala da Rainha, el refectorio y la biblioteca real. Queda poco del palacio. El palacio fue uno de los edificios más importantes del país y también tenía un enorme valor histórico. Fue aquí donde Vasco da Gama recibió la misión de encontrar una ruta marítima hacia la India.
