Chakangrao (la antigua Kamphaeng Phet) tenía el mismo concepto de planificación urbana que Sukhothai y Si Satchanalai, con zonas separadas para sitios religiosos, tanto dentro como fuera de los límites de la ciudad. Chakangrao estaba situado en una ubicación estratégica cerca del río Ping. La ciudad era un puesto avanzado y estaba fortificada con un alto muro de defensa y fortalezas, todas construidas de laterita. La ciudad rectangular medía de 300 a 700 metros de ancho y 2,200 metros de largo.
Una zona dentro de la muralla de la ciudad que cubre un área de 503 rais incluye Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Phra That, el Palacio Antiguo (Sa Mon), el Santuario de Siva, la muralla de la ciudad, el foso y las fortificaciones.
