La ciudad de Lamphun fue originalmente el centro del Reino Mon, conocido como Hariphunchai y se cree que fue fundado a finales del siglo VII o principios del siglo VIII d.C. La primera y más famosa gobernante de Hariphunchai fue la Reina Chamma Thewi, cuyas legendarias hazañas amorosas y diplomáticas son el tema de numerosos cuentos populares de Lan Na. La independencia se perdió finalmente a finales del siglo XIII, cuando Lamphun fue tomada por el rey Mengrai e incorporada a su Reino de Lan Na (millón de campos de arroz).
