La ville de Lamphun était à l'origine le centre du Royaume Mon, connu sous le nom de Hariphunchai et dont on pense qu'il a été fondé à la fin du 7ème ou au début du 8ème siècle après J.-C. La première et la plus célèbre souveraine de Hariphunchai était la reine Chamma Thewi, dont les exploits amoureux et diplomatiques légendaires sont le sujet de nombreux contes populaires de Lan Na. L'indépendance a finalement été perdue à la fin du 13ème siècle, lorsque Lamphun a été pris par le roi Mengrai et intégré à son royaume de Lan Na (million de rizières).
