De stad Lamphun was oorspronkelijk het centrum van het Mon Koninkrijk, bekend als Hariphunchai en wordt verondersteld te zijn opgericht in de late 7e of vroege 8e eeuw na Christus. De eerste en beroemdste heerser van Hariphunchai was Koningin Chamma Thewi, wiens legendarische romantische en diplomatieke exploits het onderwerp zijn van talloze Lan Na volksverhalen. Onafhankelijkheid ging uiteindelijk verloren in de late 13e eeuw, toen Lamphun werd ingenomen door Koning Mengrai en werd opgenomen in zijn Lan Na Koninkrijk (miljoen rijstvelden).
