La vallée de Gail est une vallée qui s'étend de l'Est du Tyrol à la Carinthie. Elle commence à Kartitsch et se termine à Villach. La vallée de Gail ne forme pas une unité hydrographique : la majeure partie de la vallée est drainée vers l'est par la Gail, qui se jette dans la Drau au niveau de la localité de Maria Gail ; en revanche, la section la plus à l'ouest de la vallée est drainée vers l'ouest par le Gailbach. Le col de Kartitsch constitue ici la ligne de partage des eaux de la vallée.
