Sur la place G. Maczek, près du marché à draps, un authentique char Sherman a été érigé en monument en mémoire de la libération de la ville par la Première division blindée polonaise sous le commandement du général Stanislaw Maczek en 1944. Le général Maczek a également été immortalisé dans une création en bronze de Jef Claerhout à Tielt. À l'occasion du 50e anniversaire de la libération de Tielt et de la région, la statue a été dévoilée sur la place des Polonais le jour de la libération, le 8 septembre 1994. Aujourd'hui encore, divers lieux de mémoire rappellent les huit soldats polonais tombés à Tielt, qui ont trouvé leur dernière demeure dans le cimetière militaire de Tielt.
