C’est à la suite d’une visite nocturne dans les forêts ardennaises en 1899 que Jean-Marie GASPAR trouva l’inspiration pour créer ce cerf bramant. L’œuvre fut d’abord coulée dans le plâtre, avant de l’être dans le bronze en 1913. Elle orne dans sa version agrandie le square Astrid depuis 1936. Jean-Marie GASPAR est né à Arlon en 1861 et est décédé à Bruxelles en 1931. A 18 ans, il choisit de travailler dans l’atelier du sculpteur Jef LAMBEAUX. Il participa à de nombreuses expositions, dont l’Exposition Universelle de Paris (1889) où il reçut un prix.
